Hail damage in South Florida. Do You Really Need a Roof Inspection?

It’s not hurricane season, but Floridians have already experienced severe weather on April 20th and the 26th.  Lightning, hail, and heavy rain poured over South Florida with winds reaching over 70 mph.  To put this into greater perspective, category 1 hurricane carries maximum stained winds are 74mph.  

These winds were high enough to knock out trees and stop traffic in Palm City.  Have you wondered what it could have done to your roof?  Have you had a roof inspection since?  Do you even need one?

What does this mean for your roof?

What was the hail size in your area? If you live in Palm City, Sebastian, Fellsmere, or West Palm Beach, you may have little to no exterior damage.  If you live in the Port St. Lucie area, where the hail size on 04/26/2020 was 1.5 inches in diameter, we highly recommend a roof inspection as soon as possible.

In general, It’s wise to schedule a roof inspection following any hail storm, regardless of severity. We especially recommend this during a particularly stormy season when roof damage can accumulate over time.  Even a small storm can cause damage to your roof.

If you reside in an area that experienced hail in April 2020,  we suggest scheduling a free professional roof inspection with one of our Modtek roofers.  Even if there were just minor damages to your roof, it’s still important that just small damages get repaired.

Other Variables to consider

  • The Age of your Roof – Much like everything else your roof will experience wear and tear over time and inclement weather may even speed up the process. Additionally, older roofs will typically require more maintenance and repairs than newer ones. If you have an older roof, you should definitely consider scheduling a roof inspection after a hail storm.
  • The Type of Roof – Some roofs are designed to withstand storms better than others. However, it’s important to note that all roofs are susceptible to storm damage. For example, a metal roof is well-suited to combat heavy rainfall and hail. A severe storm however can still cause sturdy metal sheets to fracture or come loose.
  • Insurance Policy – We have mentioned this in a previous article, but to reiterate, it’s important you get a roof inspection immediately after any possible damage. Because most insurance companies impose a claim time limit, we suggest you don’t wait!
